The 3 Best Presentations For Night Fishing

Across most of the south, the mid-summer period from late June through Labor Day can be tough as nails. Water temperatures have reached their seasonal peak, and bass become downright tough to catch during the day on even on some of the best lakes in the country. To compensate, many anglers and local tournament trails shift their efforts to the night time hours, when summer bass do the majority of their shallow feeding – making them much more catchable for anglers willing to down a cup of coffee and stay out late. Here are three top night fishing presentations

1. Spinnerbait

Although it’s not nearly as popular as it was a couple decades ago, the spinnerbait still catches them, particularly at night. The best spinnerbaits for night fishing are relatively heavy (1/2 to 1 ounce) and feature big, deeply cupped Colorado blades. The blade produces a slow, heavy thump, and the weight allows you to keep it down throughout the retrieve. Night time bass have a hard time tracking in the dark, so they really respond well to a big, thumping bait moving slowly through their area. Try slow rolling a big spinnerbait like the Strike King Premier Plus Spinnerbait along seawalls, channel edges, and steeply tapering points.

2. Jig

Like the spinnerbait, a big, bulky jig like the All Terrain Tackle Football Jig is an excellent choice for night fishing. It allows you to thoroughly dissect cover, and let’s just face it – jigs are big fish baits. The best jigs for night fishing are casting models with loud rattles. Opt for dark colors, and bulky trailers like full size creatures, or even pork. The best locations for fishing a jig at night are along points, bluff walls, ditches, and even brush.

3. Big Worm

Night time bass need a big target to track, and there’s not much out that puts out the silhouette and profile of a big 10 or 12 inch worm. Texas rigged worms like the Bassmunitions Trip Worm not only draw interest from long distance, but they can also be fished anywhere – from shallow water to deep, and in open water as well as heavy cover. They’re excellent when worked along deep break lines, on ledges, and around deep docks.
