5 Excuses You Can Use to Ditch Work and Go Fishing Today

You wake up early and slog out of bed to get ready for another mundane day at the office. You turn on the morning news and the weather guy starts talking about how beautiful it’s going to be today. You haven’t fished in weeks and every word he speaks makes you want to throw another shoe at the TV. That's when the bobber in your head goes under and you realize that today’s the perfect day to play hooky from work. Here are the top 5 excuses to get you off the hook and out to wet a line.

#1. “I’m not feeling too well.”

This is one of the all-time classic excuses for missing work. Whether it’s a fake flu, or “something you ate last night,” calling in sick is sure to get you on the water fast.Pro-tip: Most companies have a sick-time policy. Be sure to use yours wisely. The pros know to go in when they’re really sick so they can bank a few days for when the hawgs are calling.

#2. The family emergency

You’re sitting at your desk just waiting for the day to end and your buddy calls you to tell you he’s slaying 'em at your favorite spot. If you can play it cool and make it sound like an emergency, you just may be able to meet up with him sooner than you thought.Pro-tip: Always check who’s calling before you answer. If it’s a fishing buddy, be prepared to sound shocked and worried when you answer.

#3. Sales visit

If you’re in Outside Sales and you work out of the office, you can always arrange an "extended sales visit" with a prospect. You may not get the whole day off, but you should have enough time to fish for an hour or two.Pro-tip: Be sure to come up with some basic information on your “prospect.” At the very least, make up a believable name. Bassy McHawg probably won’t cut it.

#4. Home with the kids

If your boss has kids then he likely knows how unpredictable they can be. Kids get sick all the time and sometimes you can’t find a babysitter last-minute. If the fishing can’t wait, you may have to use this excuse to get you on the water.Pro-tip: Make sure you actually have kids before using this one.
