Video: How to Clean & Maintain A Baitcaster Fishing Reel
The task of cleaning and maintaining a fishing reel might seem overwhelming but with the right tools and a little direction, the task is easier than you might think.
Watch the video as Jordan from Karl's YouTube channel walks you through the steps of proper reel care. Everything from a quick clean to adding grease or oil to the reel moving parts. With his reel care kit in hand, Jordan is able to knock out this rainy day task in a matter of minutes.
Step 1 - Clean Your Reel
Fishing reels can get quite dirty after repeated use. To get the most out of your equipment, it's essential to keep your reels clean. Dirt and grime will build upon your fishing reels' bearings and other internal parts, so you need to know how to disassemble your reel and clean it effectively and properly.
Step 2 - Add A Little Oil
Apply Your Oil - In the video, Jordan demonstrates the important friction points where a little lubricant is needed. Watch closely and pay attention to how little oil is actually applied to the reel. Less can be more in this case, so add just a dab of oil to the areas pointed out above.
Step 3 - Just A Dab Of Grease
Add The Grease - While some areas of the reel call for oil, like inside the reel cover, the line guide gears that perform better with a little grease. Using the brush included in Karl's Reel Kit, apply just a small stroke of grease to help keep things running smoothly.
