Spoons For Bass: An Underrated Deep Water Tactic
When bass are offshore and feeding on shad in the fall, spoons are a criminally underrated bait. Swimbaits and other shad imitators often dominate fall bass fishing, but throwing spoons for bass is another sure-fire way to reel 'em in all fall long. The flutter spoon and vertical jigging spoon are your best bets, but both are meant for different applications. Flutter spoons or jigging spoons for bass are both going to fill the boat, as long as you know what you're doing. Allow us to explain:
1. Flutter Spoons For Bass

Flutter spoons are named for their falling action. They are big, heavy pieces of metal which, due to their shape, fall through the water like a feather. These fluttering chunks of metal flash to get the attention of fish, and can be dropped down deep when bass are offshore feeding on shad. Their heavy bodies create flash, vibration, and everything else to trigger a reaction strike from active bass. One trick to remember when fishing with spoons like the Best Spoon is to add a swivel. It will prevent line ties as the unpredictable, erratic bait falls to the depths, and will help you to land more fish. The swivel will also help you stay latched onto big bass you reel in from the deep. If the entire school is active, you will also want to switch and try a few different spoons, and a barrel swivel will make that line tying easier.
2. Jigging Spoons For Bass

Jigging spoons and their intense flash are great for lethargic bass. When they aren't actively feeding or chasing down baitfish, a jigging spoon is a nice downsized option. They still create the flash, rumble, and distraction like a flutter spoon, just at a lower rate. They are also best fished vertically. Different than flutter spoons for bass, which are more likely to be hit on a chase. The bladed metal is cut at an angle to give it just enough action to mimic a dying shad, and an easy snack for bass.Using your electronics to get on top of a school of fish will help you catch them, as all you need to do from there is drop a spoon like the J&S Custom Jigs Spoon down on light line and give it a few simple twitches. When the water is clear and you are fishing humps, points, creek channels and more, find a school and drop a spoon into their area.
