The fishing was so good that Theron Thompson, his father Jim Thompson and buddy Nate Peressini didn’t want to stop, even though they unknowingly had the next state record smallmouth bass in their boat’s livewell.

Ben French of The Billings Gazette

Theron Thompson caught a 7lb 10-ounce smallmouth back in October, which has been officially registered as the largest smallmouth in state history. The fish came out of Fort Peck Reservoir and bit a minnow rigged on a quarter ounce jig his fishing buddy, Nate, poured by hand.

Read Ben French's full story to learn more about the catch and certification process along with all of the hijinks involved. Congrats to Theron and company on an epic day of jigging minnows!
