In this episode of 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙅𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙚 Jim Ansell is breaking down some of the best baits you can throw during the prespawn to trigger strikes from big bass. Reaction baits and big jigs are king in the prespawn, so we’ve put together a group of some of our favorites from Karl’s Bait & Tackle for this video. Jim goes over what makes each bait unique and effective, as well as sharing some tips on how you can fish each bait to catch more fish during the prespawn phase.
The Googan Squad Zinger is a double-bladed spinnerbait designed to bump, bang, and zing off cover and grass. The Zinger is designed to be fished around docks, stumps, and brush while also streamlining through the veggies with ease. Each Zinger features a strong wire framework, stout hook, and a flashy Colorado and willow blade.
This lipless crank is the perfect bait for covering a lot of water in varying depths. It has a 2.5 inch body and will free fall in balance with an active flutter that will drive the bass wild. This lure is best fished with varying retrieve speeds, while keeping tension on your line. Kevin VanDam used this crankbait in his 2010 win of the Bassmaster Classic in Lay Lake, Alabama. Use a medium or medium heavy 6’9” rod with with a fast tip so that you can effectively rip it from underwater vegetation to trigger strikes.
The Heavy Metal Finesse Flippin Jig is a hall of fame bait. Flip and pitch this jig around cover to present shallow water bass with an offering they can’t refuse. Crank up the volume in your flipping game with this compact jig. The tungsten head will help your bait maintain a compact profile while also getting down to bottom quickly. Paired with a stout jig head and weed balanced weed guard to help ensure bites turn to catches.
Aggressive bass want a fast-moving bait. It’s fun while it lasts but at some point, the action slows down, and your retrieve has to slow down too. If you’re throwing the Rapala X-Rap, there’s no need to change lures. The X-Rap is versatile—you can use an aggressive jerk-jerk-jerk retrieve when fish are chasing, then slow things down for that classic Rapala wounded-minnow action.
The 13 Fishing Cliff Banger is a hard-bodied crankbait with a moderate diving depth and big fish drawing power. Built with high-quality components and finished off in with vivid design features, the 13 Fishing Cliff Banger is a high performing bait that will help you crank up a fatty. Moderate diving crankbaits like the will work when casting offshore, fishing weed edges, or targeting deeper docks. Use monofilament or fluorocarbon line with a medium-medium heavy power rod when fishing the Cliff Banger.
