ESSENTIAL GEAR:
HELPFUL TOOLS THAT EVERY BEGINNER SHOULD CONSIDER

Karl LOVES showing people how to fish

Fishing nets, pliers, mosquitos, weather — anglers need to consider all sorts of things before hitting the water. Below is a list of extra tools that every angler should have — you will thank yourself for getting these!

FISHING NET

FISHING NET

Fishing nets are used to land and protect fish during battle. Once a hooked fish gets retrieved close to the angler, a fishing net is deployed to help scoop the fish from the water. Fishing nets help increase the landing percentage of a fish dramatically, especially for large fish that are challenging to secure by hand.

In addition to helping anglers catch fish, fishing nets are a useful conservation tool for releasing fish after they are caught. Fishing nets don’t require anglers to tire a fish out as much before bringing it to shore, they also help you keep the fish in the water during the landing process which increases its chances of being released and caught again.

FISHING PLIERS

FISHING PLIERS

You might be asking yourself; what are fishing pliers used for? Well, when a fish bites a hook they often inhale it deep into their mouth in areas that are hard to reach. Fishing pliers will help you safely remove hooks, cut fishing lines, and change out fishing hooks.

RAIN GEAR FOR FISHING

RAIN GEAR FOR FISHING

The weather person can be and will be wrong at some point so you always want to bring rain gear with you. A simple poncho, rain jacket and pants will be all you need. The more you fish the more often you will be impacted by rain. The more you fish the more you should invest in your rain gear. Buying the right set of rain protection once will pay for itself over the years.

Avoiding purchasing ‘’rain resistant’’ gear but instead things that are advertised as waterproof.

BUG PROTECTION

BUG PROTECTION

In certain situations bug spray is not necessary but when you need it you need it. Mosquitos, gnats, flies, and ticks roam abundantly in many areas we like to fish. Remember to bring bug spray or other protective measures to help defend against these critters. Wearing long sleeves and tucking your pants into your socks can help prevent harmful bug bites. The socks over the pants might not look cool but it can protect you in the woods!

SUN PROTECTION

SUN PROTECTION

Protecting yourself from the sun's harmful rays can help reduce fatigue, sunburn, and other long term negative effects. Anglers lather up with sunscreen, wear long sleeves and even cover themselves with a thin cloth mask that covers their face — we call them neckos.
