ESSENTIAL GEAR:
THE COMMON DIFFERENCES IN FISHING LINE

Karl LOVES showing people how to fish

Fishing line is any cord or string used for angling. In conventional fishing, lines are made from different materials to help suit the needs of particular fishing situations or techniques.

The fishing line is then spooled to a fishing reel and then wrapped on a fishing rod. The three most popular fishing lines are Braided Line, Monofilament Line, and Fluorocarbon fishing line.

MONOFILAMENT

Monofilament fishing line is a single strand fishing line typically made from nylon. Monofilament is one of the most affordable, widely used, and user-friendly fishing lines. Monofilament is neutrally buoyant and stretchy.

BRAID

Braided Fishing Line consists of multiple individual strands of material braided together to make a single fishing line. Most braided fishing lines are either 4 or 8 individual strands — making this line very strong and long-lasting. Braided line is a floating line and is also dyed, so it comes in multiple color options.

FLUOROCARBON

Fluorocarbon fishing line is a synthetic line made from a variety of materials. Newer than both monofilament and braided line, fluorocarbon is a low-stretch abrasion-resistant fishing line that goes virtually unseen to fish.

Bass anglers use fluorocarbon because the fish can’t see their line and it’s low-stretch. The tightness of low-stretch line creates better hooksets when someone is setting the hook.
