FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS:
HOW TO CAST
#1
To make a cast, start by positioning your body in the direction you want to cast.
#2
Hold the rod in front of you, pointing straight out and parallel to the ground.
#3
Hold the rod with your dominant hand, placing your hand where the reel meets the rod.
#4
Using your pointer finger, grab the line coming out of the reel.
#5
With the line secured against the rod, use your other hand to open the bail of your reel.
#6
From there, pull your rod back with your dominant hand, so it is next to you, keeping it parallel to the ground.
#7
To cast, quickly swing your rod forward so it points directly in front of you.
#8
As you whip the rod, release your pointer finger off of the line, but maintain your grip on the rod.
#9
Once your rod is in front of you, wait until the bobber lands in the water and then close the reels bail.
#10
You may need to reel in the line a couple inches until it is tight.
Once the rig is in the water, you’ll need to know when you have a bite. The bobber serves as a strike indicator. Watch the bobber when you first cast to see how it moves with the natural current. When you see it dip more than that, there’s a fish on the end of the line.
